Not sure if I have posted this all ready but it is a good one and worth reading especially if you are into basketball and think about it like I do (and, it seems, Shane Battier).

'Really now, could there be a better time to decriminalize/fully legalize pot? Or, more fully, to decriminalize pot, and then spread respectable pot shops and vending machines and dispensaries far and wide, instill quality control and decent oversight and then tax the living hell out of the glorious, stress-reducing goodness, as we stop wasting billions fighting its grand ubiquity and instead sink into profitable pools of warm, hazy progress? Don't you already know the answer?'

Personally I would have hoped that facts, truth and what is right would have decided this situation long ago, but I guess part of our national culture is to wait until our back is against the wall before we change much of anything.

The most important part of the President's remarks yesterday:

We will need to end a culture where we ignore problems until they become full-blown crises instead of recognizing that the only way to build a thriving economy is to set and enforce firm rules of the road.

Here's my thing with this as I read Will's column at the time of publication:

I was going to write a letter, but honestly I had hoped that his crackpot point of view is now so ludicrous that no one would respond, no one would talk about it and no one would even give two shits that this shill was still shilling for, I guess, big corporate interests who want the status quo to continue with respect to our rapidly degrading environment.

So I guess I am a bit disappointed that he and this ludicrous point of view is getting any attention at all while at the same time I am saying: wow, Will, did you get pown'd.

I want to ammend my post a bit here due to the quick calculations I did in my head in the shower this morning: Howard probably is worth the cash they threw at him.  Oprah?  Not so much.

So I agree with this Paul:

'So now we’re in trouble — deeper trouble, I think, than most people realize even now. And I’m not just talking about the dwindling band of forecasters who still insist that the economy will snap back any day now.'

But, and I am sorry to be optimistic, I do think we have some things starting to work in our favor.  Granted it will not be like the WWII stimilus that you cite, but where you have your head in numbers, statsitics and the economics of the situation my hope is that life will break the bounds of what you and others may think is possible.  We are set up for a great moment.

Robin,
You have every reason to be nervous.  Howard will be okay but man this?  Not good for you, Fred, Artie or Gary.  And Howard I am listening to you now saying that Sirius is a cash cow, but unfortunately I don't think that is true long term.  They are a poorly run company at this point and put all their eggs in a basket of buying up talent and not doing enough on the hardware end.  Their aftermarket hardware is TERRIBLE especially on the most important end for, you know, a radio company: reception.  Not looking good and oddly Howard you are part of the problem: you really did not need that much money, but hey, kudos to you.  Gotta look out for numero uno.

I could not agree with this post more here.  I watched this interview earlier this morning thanks to Barry here and was struck by the exact same thing: these stupid fucking talking heads just. are. not. getting. it.  Moreover being insultatory and demeaning towards the people who got it exactly right?!?!?  From the very first jump, by trying label these two damn near geniuses in their own way using stupid monikers they made up, to the very end it made me sick.

Too bad the stupid talking heads were not smart enough to even realize that Mr. Taleb was talking not just about our society and things we need to change but talking about them.

Not just worst stock but potentially dumbest company, our dear Sirius.  To try and get their house of cards in order they decide to try and change terms of the contracts they have with their longest running subscribers.  Charge me extra for online access?  AND act like I have to act fast!? Who has billions in debt hanging out over them and paid through the nose for bad talent when they really should have invested instead in hardware that works?  Who needs to act fast (and wisely)?

And he does speech it.  I wonder: primetime this thing?

Someone wrote something similar yesterday, but perhaps not as well framed.

In response to what you are saying: Obama is, sadly, much to blame for giving the Republicans so much leverage. He defined the challenge as biparitsanship not saving the U.S. economy. Right now, he has only one chance to re-set this deteriorating debate: He needs to give a major speech on the economy, explain to Americans what is happening and what must be done. People will, as of now, still listen to him -- and what else is his political capital for?

I am sorry to see you turning a big more grey all ready Mr. President.  Interviews like this, I am sure, don't help.  I don't want to sit here in my little cube and act like I have all the answers to this but I will say this:

1.  People don't realize what we are dealing with.  By this I mean 'the people' you are trying to help.  More and more are starting to each day like some of my co-workers who got laid off yesterday, but most just aren't getting it because they don't see what is happening or how this is unfolding.  So when I hear on the radio a question like: who would you like to punch?  I think to myself: 'I would like to punch you DJ record spinning fuckers for being so glib yesterday about the economy because "they saw a line at the Apple store for the new iPhone."'  Sadly these fuckers are dumber even then the people lining up at the store (who are more ill informed than anything).

Now to be fair I know you can't go all henny penny for fear of making the worst, worse.  And also to be fair to you: you are saying it repeatedly that things are not going to get better quicker and things may get worse, but, well, us people ain't good listeners.

So long story short: I don't have the answer on this point.

Cause in a minute, there's gonna be some real trouble comin out
Just a warnin, as usual some cats wont heed it
The hard headed always gotta feel it to believe it

back to my solution to save America>

2.  The interview you did was good to start to re-frame this debate we are hearing, but like my beloved teachers union (big ups!) and other unions out there you have been getting crushed in the general media.  Now is this because of big media bias or because the democrats are otherwise engaged and the republicans have all the time to get on the squak box or the democrats are just lazy?  I don't know, but like always I would love for you to crush them as only you can by making a speech to us (even though I know you are tired).

As JMM notes, let people know as clearly as possible and get others out there as well: this is a jobs bill (and an emergency one at that).  We need it.  America and what we represent in the world needs it.
