She later told Italian state TV RAI that 'when they let me go, it was a difficult moment for me because they told me, 'The Americans don't want you to return alive to Italy.' She didn't elaborate."

I agree with you. I am not sure I buy her story either. I think the truth probably lies somewhere in between the two accounts.
It is hard to tell the truth through the fog of war. Sometimes I wish that We the People had our own unmanned arial drones to monitor exactly what is going on there.

Some interesting comments from the Italian prez.
"In his first major address since Friday’s shooting strained relations between Washington and one of its biggest allies, Berlusconi told Italy’s Senate that the car carrying agent Nicola Calipari and hostage Giuliana Sgrena stopped immediately when a light was flashed."
